How I Started Running with McRUN

Throwing it back to 2024, the winter term just started, and I already need a break. I was overwhelmed with school, my placement, and I was totally over the winter in Montreal. I came across an Instagram account called @mcrun.mcgill. I found out that McRUN was still holding its runs throughout the winter term. I decided to join as a Headrunner for the winter semester. Suddenly, it was time for my first run. It was -17 degrees Celsius, and only three other people showed up.
To be frank, I felt silly. How was I supposed to run in this weather? How was I supposed to lead people when I had never done this before? But then I got to talking to the people running side by side with me. Together we ran a slow 5k to Parc La Fountaine and back. We all agreed on how annoying it was to run in the winter, but laughed since we all got together to do exactly that. I learned what programs the other runners were in, and shared ideas and opinions about our respective faculties. I met and spoke with people I would have otherwise never met despite attending the same university. I had an amazing run despite the weather, the motivation being low, and the ice on the ground ( I might have slipped once or twice, off the record tip- the bike lanes are often plowed better than the sidewalks). That was when I realized the community that McRUN had, and barely anyone had spoken to me about it before.
The runs are not about running super fast or showing off. It’s a community space, which I find people crave these days. It was a time and place to meet new people with similar interests. It was a chance to motivate myself and others. Running is often considered an individual sport, but it doesn’t have to be. We run together, with each other, and for each other. We chat about McGill student life, about running tips and about random things too.
Fast forward to the present day, 2025, I have completed my winter term as headrunner, and now join the runs as a runner. I have met some of my closest friends through McRUN and I have strengthened my relationship with running with the help of these friends. They cheer me on when I have long runs, races, or know what to say to get me out the door. The McRUN community shows up for each other. I have experienced cool opportunities thanks to McRUN through their sponsorships and events like McRACE 2025 and the cheer station for the Montreal Marathon.
Whoever is reading this, I urge you to come to one of the runs hosted throughout the week, I can’t think of one downside! It is a great way to keep running through the tough times of the semester.
Here are my tips for people thinking of joining McRUN:
1. JUST DO IT
2. Bring a good vibe! People want to talk and introduce themselves; don’t be afraid to put yourself out there.
3. While the weather is still warm, be sure to hydrate and rest properly.
4. Be mindful of the traffic lights and other pedestrians.
5. Have a good time! Don’t be worried about pace, just enjoy running in this beautiful city.
